Spanish Speech and Language Disorders
Materials for Intervention
An increasing number of speech-language pathologists are experiencing challenges in their efforts to identify and provide intervention for Hispanic students with communication disorders. There are simply not enough bilingual speech-language pathologists to meet the needs of the growing Hispanic student population in our schools. Moreover, it is difficult to find appropriate intervention materials for students who speak primarily Spanish.
In an effort to meet the need for appropriate intervention resources, Larry Mattes and Irene García-Easterly created the Bilingual Speech and Language Intervention Resource, a book that includes guidelines and materials for working with students from Spanish language backgrounds. Both monolingual and bilingual speech-language pathologists will find this resource to be helpful in planning and implementing intervention programs. The book includes word lists, instructional goals, handouts for parents, developmental norms, information about dialectal differences, record forms, and a variety of other resources that can be used on a daily basis to meet the diverse needs of the Hispanic student population. The materials are all presented in an easy to use format.
