Situation Communication (SITCOM) (#48251-IN)

Ages 8 through 15.The activities in the second edition of this popular book help children develop effective strategies for solving problems and interacting with others in various social situations. Students learn to use socially-appropriate language, recognize the communication needs of others, express feelings and viewpoints, understand and respect different points of view, give explanations, ask appropriate questions, and select appropriate strategies for social interaction. Reproducible worksheets are included.

The 52 short stories in Part 1 can be used to teach new vocabulary and to help children develop communication strategies for solving problems in a variety of situations. The story characters encounter problems commonly experienced by school-age children. Situations are presented in which story characters experience feelings such as jealousy, disappointment, shame, embarrassment and fear. Problems related to drug use, dishonesty, violence, prejudice, and other issues of social concern are also presented.

The reproducible worksheets include vocabulary development exercises and thinking questions related to the content of the stories. Students define vocabulary words and use them in sentences. The questions that follow each story are designed to generate discussions in which students talk about how they would react and what they would say if confronted with the situations presented in the text.

Part 2 of the book includes supplemental vocabulary development and problem-solving activities relating to the use of communication in specific situations. Role-playing activities are incorporated into some of the lessons.

This is an essential resource for speech-language pathologists and other educational professionals who work with students who have communication disorders and/or social interaction problems.

The printed book edition and the CD edition are the same price if ordered separately. Save money when you order both the book and CD at the same time. The CD includes the COMPLETE BOOK and makes it easy to print out copies of the reproducible book pages.
