Spanish Articulation Measures: A Tool for Assessing Articulation and Phonology in Bilingual Children

Spanish Articulation Measures has become one of the most widely used instruments for assessing articulation and phonology in students from bilingual backgrounds. Spanish Articulation Measures makes it possible to assess speech sound production in a variety of contexts.
 
Assessment begins with a spontaneous naming task in which the student names pictures. In addition to recording production errors on specific phonemes, the record form includes space for recording phonological processes.
 
Following the administration of the spontaneous word production task, a variety of additional tasks can be administered to assess production of specific phonemes in more depth. If a student exhibits difficulty producting /r/, for example, you can examine production of this sound in a variety of words. The instrument also includes a sound stimulability measure, word repetition articulation screening tool, and other tools.
 
Normative data are reported from the research literature. Although normative data for individual sounds can be helpful in educational decision making, specialists should focus on the specific articulation patterns used by the student before making educational decisions. Spanish Articulation Measure (SAM) provides more information than any other instrument for use in identifying specific problems affecting speech production in Spanish and has been used throughout the world to facilitate the identification of children with articulation disorders.
