Ages 8 through 12 or remedial learners. Now children can master the mechanics of written language by becoming "sentence mechanics." The activities in this book require students to repair sentences containing errors in punctuation, to fix run-on sentences, to find hidden punctuation errors, and to answer questions by writing sentences with appropriate punctuation. Capital letter, periods, commas, question marks, quotation marks, exclamation points, apostrophes, dashes, and colons are targeted in the lessons. All lessons are reproducible.
The book is organized into three sections:
- Basic Training for Sentence Mechanics. The worksheets in this section provide practice in the use of common forms of punctuation. Students take on the role of "sentence mechanics" as they add periods, commas, and other punctuation marks to sentences. Worksheets, for example, are included that focus specifically on the use of commas when words are listed in stories. This section focuses on the following:
- Capital Letters and Periods
- Question Marks
- Commas
- Exclamation Points
- Colons
- Apostrophes
- Abbreviations
- Other Punctuation Marks
- Sentence Repair Shop. In this section, students are asked to fix sentences that are missing periods, apostrophes, quotation marks, and various other forms of punctuation.
- Stories for Sentence Mechanics. In this section, incomplete stories are presented in which a variety of punctuation marks are missing. The student's task is to add the missing punctuation marks and to create a story. .
