Book of Activities and Strategies for Improving Communication Skills (BASICS) (#48025-IN)

Ages 5 through 11. Teach children the "basics" of effective communication using the activities and strategies in this book. The activities build vocabulary and oral expression skills as students use language for a variety of purposes. Children also learn "social rules" and strategies for using language to solve everyday problems. Children with communication disorders, attention deficits, and poor social interaction skills will benefit from the activities in this book. The stories are short and easy to understand

Short stories relating to social situations help students learn what to say and how to act in specific contexts. Reproducible worksheets are included.

Skills emphasized include the following:

  • Listening and following directions
  • Expressing needs and feelings
  • Responding appropriately to the needs and feelings of others
  • Describing experiences
  • Initiating interactions
  • Taking turns
  • Maintaining a topic
  • Asking for help
  • Requesting information
  • Distinguishing between appropriate and inappropriate comments

The book is divided into six sections:

  • Conversation Basics. Reproducible handouts include "rules" for starting conversations and interacting effectively with others. As students participate in the activities, they learn to distinguish appropriate from inappropriate interaction strategies.
  • Descriptive Language Use. Activities are included to help students describe experiences, tell stories, make comparisons, and give explanations.
  • Problem Solving Picture Stories. Problem-solving stories are read to students that relate to social interaction issues. Students answer questions relating to the story problems.
  • Situation Comparisons. Each of the 12 story-based activities includes a picture showing appropriate social behavior and a picture showing inappropriate social behavior. Students respond to thinking questions relating to the problem situations presented in the stories.
  • Personal Expression in Social Contexts. The lessons in this section provide opportunities for students to express feelings, share ideas, and react to the ideas and feelings expressed by others.
  • Using Classroom Activities to Build Communication Skills. This section includes examples of curriculum-based activities that require students to interact with one another as they create group projects, plan solutions for problems, etc. Each activity requires students to work as a team.

A reproducible observational inventory is included that can be used to record information about the child's communicative behavior in everyday situations.
